STUDENT GROUPS
BlackOUT
BlackOUT exists as an organization comprised of Black LGBTQIQ people and their allies dedicated to fostering community, creating political awareness, and addressing oppression. If you are interested in getting involved, contact the group’s faculty advisor, Julie Kubala, at [email protected].
The aims of BlackOUT are to:
- Create a safe space on the campus of Georgia State University for African American lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and questioning people
- Foster dialog that promotes consciousness-based awareness, particularly around the intersections of racial, sexual and gender identities and oppression
- Develop and promote programming that fosters understanding and awareness of the culture(s) of African-American lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning people
- Promote social and academic justice through collaborative efforts with other groups who are engaged in comparable goals and objectives for the betterment of the campus of Georgia State University and surrounding areas
Faces of Feminism
Faces of Feminism (FOF) is dedicated to raising awareness surrounding the oppression of minority groups along gendered, raced, classed and sexed lines.
We are an advocacy group interested in promoting a healthy and open environment for all gender/sexual minorities in the community, both on campus and in Atlanta.
Building coalitions with fellow peer organizations (at GSU and surrounding universities) is a high priority for FOF. We strive to positively affect our community by facilitating real conversation and advocacy about typically forgotten topics, such as inequality and oppression.
For more information, please contact Bridget Bailey ([email protected]) and Maria Paula Ramirez ([email protected].)
SPEAK
SPEAK is the WGSS graduate student organization. The acronym SPEAK stands for Students Promoting Engagement through Activism and Knowledge. The purpose of SPEAK is to foster feminist community among the graduate students at Georgia State University.
In addition, SPEAK aims to support graduate students in their academic, activist, and professional endeavors. SPEAK functions as a bridge from the academy to activism and to communities. Please contact Jordan Keesler ([email protected]) for more information.
