AFFILIATE FACULTY
The WGSS has several dozen affiliated faculty. These are faculty housed in other departments who are also committed to research and teaching related to women and gender. These affiliated faculty teach Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies core courses and courses crosslisted with their home departments. They also offer significant assistance with the governance of the WGSS and in working with students. They serve on WGSS committees and on WGSS students' thesis committees.

Frequently Asked Questions
WGSS affiliate faculty are faculty from any college, school, or institute at Georgia State University. WGSS affiliate faculty are faculty from any college, school, or institute at Georgia State University. Affiliate faculty may teach WGSS courses, chair or serve on graduate thesis committees, serve on WGSS standing or ad hoc committees, and crosslist relevant courses with WGSS. More importantly, they partake in the intellectual life of the Institute. Our mission is to promote research on gender, sex, sexuality, feminism, and womanism; to foster intellectual curiosity and transformative, critical thinking; and to empower scholars, students, and activists in creative work for freedom and justice. The terms for affiliate faculty status are for three years and are renewable.
The WGSS Executive Committee calls for and reviews applications for affiliate faculty status each fall and spring semester. To apply for affiliate faculty status, please email the WGSS Director: (1) a full cv, (2) a descriptive statement (of one page or less) of experience in and commitment to the study of gender and sexuality, and (3) a list of courses taught in the last three years.
Procedures for Cross-Listing Courses with the Institute for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
- All graduate and undergraduate courses offered by WGSS, whether originating in the WGSS or in another department that cross-lists (or offers WGSS “seats” in its class) must be taught by core or affiliate faculty members of WGSS.
- Cross-list courses are new or renewable:
- For renewing courses, or courses already on the books as “WGSS courses” taught by affiliate faculty, WGSS Affiliates or their departmental schedulers should contact the WGSS Business Manager to inquire about cross-listing.
- For new listings, use one of the following two procedures:
The Long Road
If an affiliate faculty member offers a course regularly that s/he believes would be appropriate for the WGSS’s undergraduate or graduate curriculum as a permanent offering, this course can be considered for inclusion in the permanent WGSS curriculum with a WGSS prefix.
- The affiliate faculty member should forward a copy of the syllabus (by September 1st) to the Director of Graduate Studies or the Director of Undergraduate Studies, whichever is relevant.
- The committee will review the syllabus in terms of its gender and sexuality studies content and analysis, relevance to women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, and fit with our overall curriculum.
- If the committee approves the syllabus, it will be forwarded to the WGSS faculty for a vote.
- If the WGSS faculty approves it, it will be forwarded to the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee
(All newly approved courses become an official course the fall following submission and approval.)
The Short Route
If an affiliate faculty member is offering a Special Topics class (or a one-time course offering) that s/he believes may be relevant to WGSS students, this course can be considered for one-time inclusion as a WGSS Special Topics class (e.g., WGSS 4910, 6910, 8920, 8921).
- The affiliate faculty member should forward a copy of the syllabus to the Director of Graduate Studies or the Director of Undergraduate Studies, whichever is relevant.
- The committee will need the syllabus by mid-semester the semester before the course is to be offered.
- The committee will review the syllabus in terms of its gender and sexuality studies content and analysis, relevance to women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, and fit with our overall curriculum.
- The WGSS Director will review course offerings and scheduling for that semester.
- If the committee and the Director approve the course, the course will be listed in GoSOLAR as a WGSS cross-listed class.
- If the syllabus is approved by the appropriate WGSS committee, the course can be scheduled the following semester (fall, spring, or summer).
